Crash (1996) - 365 Movie Challenge Day 341

Day 341 of the challenge! Final Cronenberg flick for the challenge! Saved the worst for last apparently. Crash is just too…why?

Someone needs to explain the plot of Crash to me. Not the premise, but the actual plot, because I sure as hell can’t seem to understand it! Crash is more interested in shocking it’s audience with a very loosely connected series of pornographic vignettes and violence (both sexual and car accident related) than on crafting an actual story or developing it’s weird ass characters. I understand what the car crashes begin to represent to these people as things unravel, but we never explore why they represent what they do. It basically boils down to “they were in a car accident, and that gave them all a car crash kink.” Because…reasons?

Look, I’m always down for a good ol’ dose of “show not tell”, but when all you’re showing me is sex and car chase foreplay, I have to assume something got lost in translation from script to screen. The freaking armpit vampires made more sense than this! Cronenberg’s brand of violence and sexuality only works when there’s something underneath the hood!

Damn shame too, because there are some great performances in Crash. Spader and Hunter are always great, but Elias Koteas is especially haunting here. I’m glad I got through so much of Cronenberg’s filmography throughout this challenge, but I’m completely disappointed I ended this little mini challenge with Crash. I will say the title of the movie is appropriate…
