Day 221 of the challenge! Dolores Claiborne is an excellent family drama wrapped up as a murder mystery. The atmosphere in this one is enveloping.

Kathy Bates and Jennifer Jason Leigh OWN IT! They give the movie it's heavy emotional anchor. Every new development in the mystery gives them a new layer to explore with their characters.
The character work and story wouldn't be so great without the great direction and script.
While Dolores Claiborne is marketed as a thriller, at it's core it's an empowering story about a mother and daughter. The mystery plot beautifully explores the themes that usually accompany mother/daughter stories, elevating both.
Like mentioned, the atmosphere is all encompassing. It's almost a character in a way.
